I Left My Heart In...

Down the block from George's apartment, next to the overpriced stationary store and right outside the bank, there's a big heart sculpture. With a little bit of research, I found out that there were once more than a hundred heart sculptures scattered around the city, all part of a 2004 project to benefit the San Francisco General Hospital Foundation. Most of the sculptures were auctioned off but a few remain. (Last year we took a photo next to singer Tony Bennett's contribution, located in Union Square)

The one I walk by most days, on the way to the corner donut shop, has a particular part that finally caught my eye. The line, "I will not break your heart," is repeated a few times until at the bottom it becomes "I will not break..." and "I will not..." with the rest smudged out. The implication and meaning is clearly that despite the best of intentions and promises, someone's heart will likely be broken. Lately that seems to be truer than usual.

No wonder nobody bought this statue.
